The Sugar Hill Jazz band comprises a classic line-up of female vocals, saxophone, keyboard, double bass and drums - with male lead and backing vocals on select tracks.
Lead vocalist Andrea Blades was born and raised in New Zealand and has lived in the UK since 2000. She was involved with numerous jazz projects in her home country including television and radio appearances and a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. Since moving to the UK, she has made a strong impression on the London jazz scene, performing at the 606, Pizza on the Park and the Spice of Life and headlining the Jazz Futures Festival.
Tenor saxophonist Lynden Blades has performed with a multitude of London-based jazz, soul, blues and ska bands over the past decade and currently plays more than 200 gigs each year. Originally self-taught, he furthered his studies at London's City Lit and Brunel University in the 1990's and is now himself a sought after teacher of saxophone to beginners. Lynden also sings with the band on a variety of jive, 50's and rock and roll numbers and his vibrant, playful vocals always add an irresistible dynamism to the evening.
The band's remaining line-up of keyboard, double-bass and drums features a selection of top London jazz musicians including Esben Tjalve, Simon Colam and Frank Harrison on piano, Will Collier, Sam Burgess and Tim Dawes on bass, Ben Reynolds, Nick Smalley and Dave Smith on drums and Ben Somers, Carlos Lopez-Real and Christoffer Appel on sax. Between them they appear appear regularly at London's Ronnie Scott's, 606 Jazz Club, Pizza Express and other leading jazz venues. The line-up of the rhythm section can vary depending on availability, however the high calibre of the music is always guaranteed.
